What happens to a squirrel's breathing rate during hibernation?

This is a science question that was my homework. Can somebody please answer my question!!!!!!!What happens to a squirrel's breathing rate during hibernation?
When ground squirrels hibernate, they go into their dens to sleep through the cold of winter. They usually hibernate five to six months of the year. Their body temperatures drop so that they are only about one or two degrees higher than the temperature outside. The body temperature drops below the freezing point of water. Their breathing and heart beats slow down. A ground squirrel鈥檚 heart will beat only a few times in a minute during hibernation. Every week or so, the squirrels wake up for about 12-20 hours and then go into hibernation again. Some ground squirrels don't hibernate if they are in climates where the winters don't get too cold. Hibernation is the animal's way to adapt to things it can't change like weather or not having food available. What happens to a squirrel's breathing rate during hibernation?
the breathing rate will probably go down like all animals during sleep.
squirrels hibernate during winter? there's something wrong with the ones around my house then. because i thought they stored acorns and stuff because there would be very little food available to them. Unlike at my house, where we have food available to them at all times. so i'm confused.
the rate decreases
the breathing slows down just like most of the vital systems

Re: does anyone know of any good home remedy squirrel deterents?

They are digging up and eating all the flowers and vegtables and yes i agree a shotgun would be the best method, but for right now were living in a nieghborhood till sometime next year, can someone help keep an ole country boy from gettin locked up?Re: does anyone know of any good home remedy squirrel deterents?
I understand that a sprinkling of Bobcat Urine from your local nursery or garden store does the trick often.Re: does anyone know of any good home remedy squirrel deterents?
I just gave up and put a bird feeder across the yard from my garden.

Some of the ';squirrel proof'; birdfeeders are quite amusing when the squirrels get into them. :)

chicken poop fertilizer works well and is a great lawn fertilizer too.
a pellet gun and time
Irish Spring, sliced into small strips and placed in and around your plants. Works for deer at least.

If it doesn't work for the squirrels, get the pellet gun.
Get yourself a small dog such as a fiest or beagle and train it to tree the squirrels. They wont stick around long when chased by a dog.....This method is 100%.
Make sure you don't have any bird feeders around. Squirrels are attracted to any form of food you have...the less food, the less squirrels.

My dog was licking a dead flat squirrel in the street, then she through up her food for 2 days. Could I have caught from my dog due to the dead squirrel. Can a dog get a disease from a dead squirrel and transfer illness to a human.?
Yes, because you don't know if that squirrel had any diseases. Take your dog to the vet and then tell your doctor what happened and your thoughts on the matter.

How do i make a cake shaped like a squirrel?

with special formHow do i make a cake shaped like a squirrel?
y would you wanna do that? How do i make a cake shaped like a squirrel?
Actually, you can find a good coloring page of a squirrel online. Bake the cake according to recipe. Cut out the squirrel from the paper, put it on the cake. Keep it from slipping on the cake with a bit of icing. Carefully cut it out. Here are a few to choose from, or you can find yor own.
Just bake a regular rectangular cake (possibly and probably two depending on how many you plan to serve). After baking the cake, allow to cool, place them on a flat, foil covered board (I use a piece of half inch plywood with a double layer of foil) then start cutting the cake(s) and make the shape of the squirrel. To act as a guide, keep a picture nearby of the object you intend to make it look like. Take white frosting and mix some food coloring to get the different colors you need to make your image. Practice a bit with small amounts of food color and frosting to get just the correct look of color you want.

You can also a regular rectangular cake and 'paint' the image on to the cake using a base color frosting and use frosting tubes (they usually have them in the baking aisle of the store) and draw the image onto the cake.

Just take some time and practice to shape the cake and mixing the colors to get the look you want.
you should just put frosting on a squirrel. it requires less work on your part.
First you have to make a squirrel shaped cake pan...
buy a special bowl thing in the shape of a squirrel

Does my dog really think a bird is a squirrel?

Her first time of seeing a squirrel it ran up a tree. She tried to follow.

Now when passing a tree near to our home she spotted a wood pigeon. Although she has seen them before and never taken notice she stands watching the bird with ears perked and eyes twinkling.

Each tree she passes she looks up to the branches even when nothing is there.Does my dog really think a bird is a squirrel?
Fuzzy running thing flips the switch- she is programmed to chase and she does- she has no choice. She knows all about ground- it's a flat grassy universe and she is mastering it nose to the ground- she has a shot of getting that prey- then holy crap! that little b*stard just shot straight up the m*f*ing tree!!! All of a sudden puppy's universe is expanded into an entire other dimension- that of ';UP';... the human has no conception of how huge this revelation is- IT'S ANOTHER FREAKING DIMENSION! Before there was ground and it went on forever in every direction your nose could lead you, then in a split second you lift your head and there's ';UP';. It goes on forever, but you can't go there, but those damn squirrels and birds can... her little furry mind is blown

Nose does no good in ';UP'; (meaning 80% of her senses are useless), eyes are everything in ';UP'; (meaning a feeble 10% of her senses now the only tool)... but it's not going to stop her from getting those tree loving b*stards one day- just wait.

She'll be thinking a lot about ';UP'; and those tantalizing critters that inhabit it, so far beyond her reach. Wish I was a puppy again...Does my dog really think a bird is a squirrel?
Get your dog a different dictionary.
Well, that's dogs for you. Always looking for a chance to chase something!!
    She is living in hope.

Is it possible for a person of age in MA to purchase and own a squirrel monkey? If so, how much are they?

I recently went on vacation and saw a guy walking around with a monkey tethered on his shoulder. The little squirrel monkey was trained and everything, so they were taking pictures of him with people. Evidently they can be trained and are friendly, so I wanted to see if it is possible to get one as a pet. However, searching the internet, i cant find any place that sells them or has information on who sells them.Is it possible for a person of age in MA to purchase and own a squirrel monkey? Call your local fish and wild game people,( I think that's the name if not is close enough to find the number in the phone book) and they can tell you the laws in you state, city and town where you live. Make sure you check all three. I have two capuchins and they are very friendly. But make sure you do you reading. You need to learn as much as you can be for you get your baby. They are much more like two year olds then any dog or cat. make sure you know what you are getting in to before you bring a baby home.

    no way man
I've always dreamed of getting a Squirrel monkey!! But the best thing to do and most responsible thing to do is find a wildlife rescue society, and turn him in.
    Give it too a zoo
Call the local animal control officer, and tell them. Monkeys by and large are cute in a zoo, hell to keep as pets- especially when they throw their poo at people.

For some reason, people don't like being poo targets. Go figure eh?
What? Nut eating squirrel monkey, hmmm... WHAT?!?
I'd like to see a pic of that, i would love one, but you probably should tell the ';Feds';, or some other authority that could relocate it or put it in a zoo or something so it stays safe.

You should probably take the squirrels to the vet as a clicking sound emitting from the squirrels throat is often a sign of pneumonia.

I haven't heard about it but squirrels jump on people sometimes and they may feel like they are being attacked when actually they are not. Maybe the squirrels had been abused by other people and they will feel threatened. The man who killed it probably couldn't get away on his crutches.

Ha Ha, I don't think its that funny my husband wants a squirrel as a pet. I live in California and since everything is illegal there I'm sure squirrels are too. If your not careful if you do catch one they may have rabies or ticks or any number of things so be extremely careful where do you live? If you really do want to catch one I would say ask your local police station and find out what the laws in your state (or country) are. Some animals like ';exotics'; you need a pet license for. In the state of California you cant even own a ferret with a license and if you get caught they kill it. So before you do anything find out first. Is it legal to catch a squirrel?

Everybody that is answering as ';catch one in the wild'; have no sense. You cannot take a wild animal and stick him in a cage. Most states it is illegal to have a squirrel as a pet. If you would like a squirrel as a pet go and find a LICENSED BREEDER!! Do not buy one from a guy down the street or catch one. Get one from a pet store or a licensed breeder and that is it!Plz help i want to have squirrel as a pet?
i don't think they is a store where you can buy something like that make a trap and stick a nut in it and make it where a door will close it in
They don't make good pets. They will either bite you or chew up all of your furniture. If you like rodents, I would suggest a rabbit, ferret, hamster, gerbil, or guinea pig.
Squirrels can be very aggresive, especially once they are old enough for their hormones to kick in. You would need a huge enclosure to give them anywhere near as much space as they need.
It's not really fair kinda cruel.

These are wild animals and should stay in the wild.

They aren't vicious when raised properly, but unfortunately, no; they are not legal in the state of California, and there is a really heavy fine for someone caught with one, plus having your pet taken away and likely euthanized.

I am sorry to say that California has some really stupid animal laws; we can have Reticulated pythons, but we can't have ferrets or hedgehogs. How in the world does that make sense?

    Fayetteville bans wild animals defined as ';Any nonhuman primate, raccoon, skunk, fox, wolf, coyote, poisonous snake, leopard, panther, tiger, lion, lynx, or any other warm blooded animal which can normally be found in the wild state, or the offspring borne to wild animals bred with domestic dogs or cats.';

Have gutted 2 sheds, lost pool hoses to pump and have a dozen more shrubs to replace at $50 a head. How do you get rid of squirrel infestions in sheds that eat plastic, wood, pool equip.??? Mostly black ones.?
Take a whole bulb of garlic and a few very hot peppers. Run them in a blender with 2 cups of water. Let stand overnight. Strain mixture and add 2 more cups of water. Place liquid in a spray bottle and spray everything the little buggers have been chewing on (it won't hurt your shrubs and trees.) Spray again after a rain. This will keep for a week in refrigerator. This organic mixture can be used in your garden to keep bugs away, too.How do you get rid of squirrel infestions in sheds that eat plastic, wood, pool equip.??? Mostly black ones.?
I had a whippet growing up and they're bred to catch small game. No squirrels dared come into our yard.
Cyan pepper on what they are eating, they won't like that and it won't hurt the plants.
Sheds that eat plastic ?- wooooah - whatever medication your taking , Id give it a miss for a while . What you've probably seen is someone putting some pool equipment into the shed but just thought that the shed was eating it - the plastic and wood may have just been blowing around and gone through the shed door giving the illusion of the shed eating it . I honesty think the squirrel thing is the least of your problems .
Most cities will provide you with traps that wont hurt the little pests and they will pick them up after you catch them!!

    Happy hunting

How to get rid of squirrel's in attic?

Spread some moth balls around in your attic. Squirrels as well as other small animals don't like the smell of the moth balls and they will leave. However, don't over do it with the mothballs because you want to live in the house after the squirrels leave. Just sprinkle a hand full around here and there. After the squirrels have gone be sure to repair the area where they got into the attic to prevent further invasion. I live in a rural area and I use moth balls all the time to prevent animal invasion in ';my'; space. How to get rid of squirrel's in attic?
What about calling an exterminater and have them help you out so that they dont bite you as that could be terrible if you get bit.How to get rid of squirrel's in attic?
i recommend a ruger 10-22.......worked very well for me ....but don't shoot them in the attic.......cause then you'll be asking us how to repair holes in your roof....... a bird feeder is a good attractor..... have fun....i got about 80 in one winter. good luck
The best thing to do is trap them. Set traps in the attic and in the yard. Then board up the holes they use to get into the attic. Once you trap them you can either relocate them far away from your house or some people just kill them. If you just board up the holes they will do everything they can to get back into the attic once they have decided that is their home. You have to get rid of them. Eventually other squirrels will come to your yard but they will not be as determined to get into you attic.
put superglue on acorns and throw them up there. It won't get them out, but it'd be hella funny to watch.

My two dogs caught a squirrel and ate it, is this normal?

Both of them caught a squirrel and both of them ate it. Is this something to be worried about? My two dogs caught a squirrel and ate it, is this normal?
All you need to worried about is the bones i think they will be fine yes it is normal for dogs to catch squirrels. My two dogs caught a squirrel and ate it, is this normal?
    dogs are predatory animals.. carnivores

    squirrils are prey

    yep, perfectly normal, and natural.

probably the healthiest meal they ever had.
Apart from the possibility that now this has happened, they might move on to the neighbourhood cats, the only thing I'd be concerned about is the possibility of parasites and specifically worms. And if you are in that sort of country, rabies.

    Normal - of course!
Not at all. My husbands dog ate a dead squirrel once and then threw it up. The dog started to again eat the squirrel (he just threw up). My husbands buddy that was standing there was so disgusted by it that he threw up and then the dog went over and started to eat my husbands friends vomit. Disgusting.

There are some of are friends that LOVE when we tell that story. poor kid...lol

Dogs do really gross things and always seem to be fine. Besides this is an instinctual habit. I am sure the pups are alright :)
    Yes, it is normal.

Realize though, they may get parasites from eating it though. Next time you go in for your regular annual physical for the dogs, bring along a fecal sample.

    Best wishes...
Yuck!! My concern would be if the squirrel had rabies. Guess you 'll just have to either take then to the vet or wait and see. I'd call the vet and get his/her opinion.
Yep, for abnormal see: two squirrels caught a dog and ate it.

My dachshund swallowed a large rabbit whole once!
perfectly normal, it saved you gutting and skinning it any way lol

but on a more serious note its has bean known for squirrel brains to carry mad cow disease
';Normal';??? For predators to catch %26amp; eat prey???

    DUH?

NOTHING to freak about ....praise em!
not really i'd say. my dog ate a battery
It's called ';survival of the fittest';. It happens every day in the animal would. My pets catch birds, mice...you name it.
Yes, it is normal, my Lab/Chow mix is Squirrel CRAZY!

You need to be worried. Dogs view squirrels as prey.

    Chuckles
Uh, yesssssssssss - it's how dogs survived before being domesticated. LOL #
It is normal, we are talking instincts here. Just make sure they do not do it to any small animals that are pets. I would discourage it. Do not praise your dog for this. Even though it is their instincts they do not need it to survive anymore. You feed them, you are master, they should obey. One day your dogs may chase the neighbors cat and eat it and if it is on their property they can sue you.

In many states you can shoot a dog on the spot for chaseing things like deer and such.

I forbid my dog to chase small animals since we have other small animals as pets. I introduce them as ';babies'; (word meaning be careful) and she knows to be gentle.
yes.... both cats and dogs have instincts that has the need/want to kill.... my dog has been trying to get a bird but never gets one.... my cat gets birds and would eat them.... or the dog.... its ok.... its what they do
Really!? Take them 2 a vet!!

What is easier to take care of? A baby flying squirrel, a baby chipmunk, a baby gerbil, or a baby rabbit?

I love all of 'em....But my dad wants the easiest one to take care of. And also, where is the best place i can find them in MA?What is easier to take care of? A baby flying squirrel, a baby chipmunk, a baby gerbil, or a baby rabbit?
I would say a gerbil. Chipmunks and flying squirrels are as bit less domesticated so they wouldn't be as social and would need some special care. Rabbits are fairly easy to take care of, but they get big FAST so you would need a bigger cage(plus they poop a lot!). Rabbits also need exercise that they can't always get in a cage so you would need an outdoor area for it to run in and eat grass. Gerbils stay small, and are very social. They don't need a whole lot of care, just a full food dish, water bottle, and some cardboard or wood to chew on. If you want the easiest thing to take care of get a gerbil. If you want a pet you can hold a lot and is very affectionate, get a rabbit, but keep in mind that they do get big and require a bit more care because of their size. If I could suggest something in the middle, guinea pigs are more social and affectionate than gerbils but smaller than rabbits. They are very easy to care for, but they do make squeaky guinea pig noises XD You can get gerbils, guinea pigs, and rabbits and any local pet store or Petco/PetSmart. Hope this helps! What is easier to take care of? A baby flying squirrel, a baby chipmunk, a baby gerbil, or a baby rabbit?
    definitly gerbil

    i have gerbils
Gerbil, 100%. Rabbits are like cats, they need companionship. Chipmunks and Squirrels do NOT make good pets, they are wild animals and need to live in the WILD.

Gerbils live in hamster cages, they should always have a same-sex partner. Change their bedding once a week, give them food and a couple hidey holes and a place to burrow and they'll be fine. Rabbits are much more of a hassle and a lot more expensive.

I would check your local shelter, if they have none, go to a pet store near you.
    gerbil
Your best bet is to find a local spca. I would say gerbil but you can't hold them like you can a rabbit, but you still can't help falling in love with them!
well i suggest a baby hamster or a baby gerbil. P.S i prefer baby hamster
gerbil. go to a local petco or petsmart. also the cheapest
    I would say a rabbit
    i would say gerbil.

What is the required fps to kill a rabbit or squirrel humanely?

It depends on the caliber. Since you didn't say what caliber, I'm going to hit the two most common ones, .17 and .22, in several weight projectiles.

Dr. Beeman asserts that rabbit takes 5 ft-lbs of impact energy. To deliver that a .17 caliber gun shooting an 8 grain pellet would need 530 fps of impact velocity to give 5 ft-lbs of impact enery. The same .17 caliber gun shooting a 5.1 grain BB would need 665 fps of impact velocity to give 5 ft-lbs of impact velocity. A .22 caliber gun shooting a 14 grain pellet would need 401 fps of impact velocity to give 5 ft-lbs of impact energy. The same .22 gun shooting a 32 grain pellet (yes they do make those) would need 265 fps to give 5 ft-lbs of impact energy.

Dr. Beeman asserts that squirrel takes 3 ft-lbs of impact energy. To deliver that a .17 caliber gun shooting an 8 grain pellet would need 411 fps of impact velocity to give 3 ft-lbs of impact energy. Shooting a 5.1 grain BB the same .17 caliber gun would need 515 fps of impact velocity to give 3 ft-lbs of impact energy.. Shooting a .22 caliber 14 grain pellet you'd need 311 fps of impact velocity to give the required 3 ft-lbs. With a .22 caliber 32 grain pellet you're down to 205 fps to give 3 ft-lbs of impact energy. What is the required fps to kill a rabbit or squirrel humanely?
Okie Road is dead wrong about the bb thing. at 10 yards it will make a 3/4 inch hole and tear everything with it. Inside 15 -20 yards it is a humane killer. For squirrel i would recommend 500-600 fps inside 20 yds but outside of that get something up in the 800's. For Rabbits don't hunt with a bb gun use a pellet gun with at least 700 fps and good ammo. What is the required fps to kill a rabbit or squirrel humanely?
I've killed plenty with a 500 fps .177 cal. pellet gun. Stick to head and neck shots only with any pellet gun. Don't use BBs to hunt any game. They tend to penetrate, not expand, and simply wound game.

In the US, is it legal to have a flying squirrel as a pet?

I love these little guys. I've always wanted one, and I was wondering if it was even legal. Something tells me it is, i read an article but that was 5 yrs ago, but im not sure.In the US, is it legal to have a flying squirrel as a pet?
they are legal in some states, but not in others. you have to check with your local wildlife agency regarding laws.

sugar gliders are actually not that similar to flying squirrels, but you should do your own research regarding that to decide what fits your lifestyle best.

they are very cute, but they can also be aggressive, and they are quite demanding. good luck!In the US, is it legal to have a flying squirrel as a pet?
It is LEGAL to own them. My sister, whom breeds exotic/hard to find animals, ex: Mini Horses, Chinchillas (of multiple 'breeds') AND Flying Squirrels; as well as other animals.

She hand fed and handled them regularly to make sure they were 'used' to humans. Including the babies that were bore by them.

They, like ALL other animals, if are mistreated by someone, will show it. She always gave/gives her babies the up most TLC to be carried on through their lives by their new owner(s).
It's legal to own them. My cousins saved some one year that had been abandoned at their police station (have NO idea why they chose the police station?) and raised them till the days they left this world.
Yes its a wild animal, and they are an endangered animal, and yes they are very cute! But they can be very mean too!
try sugar gliders, they are about the same :D

I'm not aware of any brushes on the open market that are made from the hair of squirrels, at least not in this country. To begin with, at least in America, it would be illegal to do so. Natural hair brushes are made from animals that are raised for such purposes and the animals are not harmed in the process. So brushes made from squirrel hair are European imports.

The legal natural hair brushes that I'm aware of come from the hairs of oxen, hogs, horses, badger, sable, llama, goats, camel and human hair. Sable is a small squirrel-like mammal found across most of Northern Europe and Russia and they are raised in captivity for their hair. Sable brushes are very expensive (Kolinsky sable being the most expensive) compaired to hog or horse or ox bristle brushes. Brushes made from badger hair are also very expensive. By comparison, squirrel-hair brushes are inexpensive. But many US art store suppliers won't carry them. I can't tell you which art stores carry them but I'm pretty sure Dick Blick's (a nation-wide chain store) doesn't.

Actually, they're wild animals, so they're illegal to own (at least where I live). This means it'd only cost you a small net %26amp; bait, and a willingness to break the law.

What is the difference between the construction of a squirrel cage rotor and a slip ring rotor in a 3ph motor?

The copper conductors in a squirrel-caged motors are just short-circuited in its ends while in a slip ring motor, the conductors are connected in series to a star point. The resistance in the latter are higher than that of the former motor. The windings are connected in series with an external resistance through carbon brushes to increase its resistance during start-up. The slip ring motors usually have higher starting torque and lower starting current than squirrel-caged motors. What is the difference between the construction of a squirrel cage rotor and a slip ring rotor in a 3ph motor?
The squirrel cage motor, as the description says, is like a squirrel cage. Thick aluminum bars formed into a cage.

The slip ring motor (correct term wound rotor motor) has poles formed of laminated iron that are wound with enamel coated wires. The wires are connected to the slip rings so that the connection can be made with brushes and resistances be added to the circuit for starting and/or speed control.

I have a squirrel right now in the Laundry Room, what do I do with it please?

The back door to the patio area was open and he came inside early and now we shut the door to the Laundry Room and he is still in there.I have a squirrel right now in the Laundry Room, what do I do with it please?
just leave the door open, he'll get out eventually. If worst comes to worst, you can buy a live trap. Don't try to chase him, he is way faster then you. O you can do the ol' box propped up with the stick trick.I have a squirrel right now in the Laundry Room, what do I do with it please?
Just leave the door open, he'll go back out.
wack it with a broom! just kidding.... make a trail of peanuts leading outside. you might have to call someone to get it out! it could bit you! it may have rabies!
I would try and put a barrier up to corral it to the nearest exit. If you have a window in your laundry room, is there any chance you could open it from the outside? There is always the fishing net catch and release method. Or, call your local varmint control and for a price they will come out and get rid of it.

    Good luck!
I would open the back door to the patio again so he has an escape route. If you have some peanuts place a few near the door where he can see them (smell them) when all is quiet he should (when he gets over his fright) head for the door using the smell of the peanuts to help him find it.. ';Do not'; try to catch him, give him a way out and he will take it.
    To the answer below......ummm....no

Anyways, I would recommend you open the door and shut all of the others in which the squirrel could go in and hide...then shoo it out.....if all else fails...call your local animal control services
Is it possible to open the door again so he can get out. Or your local humane society or vet sometimes will let people borrow traps that would allow you to catch and release him without harm.

Not sure what bait would attract a squirrel, but perhaps someone else will have that info.

    Good Luck!
    Eat it.
use a have a heart trap and peanuts for bait.
Lmao Either keep it as a pet or kill it.
Get some nuts (not in shells) or dried fruit and create a trail to lead out the door. Don't put them too close together but far enough so he can smell them and continue towards the door. Leave the door cracked with a nice stack of nuts or fruit outside of the door for him. Leave the room and keep quiet. He'll leave the room peacefully and you can close the door behind him.

If you use shelled peanuts, it'll take him a while to open them, eat them and he'll leave a mess for you to clean up..

Chasing him with a broom will make him freak out and it could take hours/days to get him out.

How would a squirrel get into my car??

It's getting cold out, and a squirrel has decided to make a nest and store nuts in the trunk of my car. There's a bunch of stuffing (haven't figured out where that came from yet, but I'm sure it's from my seats), and nuts all gathered into 1 corner of my trunk. What's the most likely way it's getting in? It looks like it's been in the inside of the car too... I have 2 cars and would really prefer it stay in this one and not move to the newer car, but at the same time I don't want it in either one... What can I do about it?How would a squirrel get into my car??
Bottom line is that regardless of what you do and how squirrel proof you think you've made your car, if it wants to it will still get in. Don't waste your time with this. Trap it and release it somewhere far away from your car, and preferably far away from anyone else's car (unless you have an enemy?? lol)

If you don't have a squirrel trap (which most people don't), visit a hardware or hunting store.

Good luck, you're going to need it!How would a squirrel get into my car??
rust hole in trunk, maybe firewall or if it flys, when you were driving it came in through a open window. lol
There is several rubber plugs under the spare tire look up from underneath you can use aluminum duct tape over the new rubber plug you will need buy. Squirrels are much more damaging than other rodents. Go to bass pro shops or out door store and purchase fox urine drip around where the car is parked and put moth balls in old nylon stockings and hang several inside the engine compartment and trunk. If you hit a bump and something shorts out you found the wires the rodent chewed Thur. Radiator hoses are immune to rodents. Move all pet food to steel trash cans and feed anamals away from your cars too.
he stole your spare key you had under the door mat. youve got to shoot him and get your key back before he makes duplicates
probably have a hole in the trunk or it could have climbed up through the engine and came in under the dash. Any wild animal is able to get inside of a vehicle.

I have had bats, cats, birds, oppossums, raccoons, mice, squirrels and snakes crawl into my vehicles looking for a warm place to hide.
Squirrel's r rodents! They can get in through lots of places. Any pipe running to your car's duct work for heat can have 1'; space a squirrel can get thru. They r very destructive.

Get a cat size/ raccoon catching cage---bait it ---and wait....Catch the squirrel and relocate it. I once had to do that to some cat that kept scratching up my car.
There must be a hole, the size a squirrel can squeeze thru. Try finding it and get it fixed.
Definitely trap it for relocation somewhere far away, and don't poison it... you don't want a dead squirrel smelling up your car if it dies somewhere you can't reach it.
Automatic door opener, teleportation, time travel, shape-shifting, high frequency vibration, travelling at light speed, but probably can squeeze through a small opening.
Its getting in throught the rear ventilation passage. Lock the cat in the garage lol
That's crazy! I thought finding a stray cat in my car was wild, but your situation takes the cake! Squirrels have a tendency to climb up into the undercarriage of a car to stay warm, so that's probably how it got in. However, your squirrel was obviously smarter when he found a way into your trunk. I don't have an answer for you, but I did find a website with some great information. Unfortunately, I don't think your going to love what they have to say...

';Wondering how to get rid of squirrels? There is no magic spray or device that you can use to make them go away. Some people try to sell predator urine, such as coyote or fox urine to get rid of squirrels, but that doesn't work. They also try to sell ultrasonic sound emitters. These devices are worthless at eliminating squirrels. Some old wive's tales recommend the use of mothballs or ammonia-soaked rags to make them leave, but I've been to countless homes where these techniques failed - biologists know that these attempts won't work. The ONE AND ONLY WAY to take care of your problem is with trapping and removal of the animals. How does a squirrel know where to build his nest in a tree?

The nests are built on branches close to tree trunks. The branches provide support for the foundation of twigs and leaves used to build the nest. The tree trunk acts as a wind breaker. I have seen nests built by young squirrels too high in a tree nearly destroyed by gale force winds abandoned and rebuilt closer to the ground in a part of the tree which offers more protection. How does a squirrel know where to build his nest in a tree?
Well...I don't know about the High nest , Low nest theory but here in Upstate, NY where I live there are so many squirrels that they chew and eat just about anything they can get their teeth into. as far as where they live, I believe they find most shelter in hollow trees, and inside of roofs and other areas of buildings and places where they can get inside. They often cause problems for home owners here by chewing their way into attics etc. and building nests.

Can be a tough critter to get rid of.

But they are awful Cute! We have grey squirrels here and on ocassion there are white ones in my back yard. How does a squirrel know where to build his nest in a tree?
how does a fox know where to dig a hole for its home

how does a lion know to hunt for food

how does a baby know to cry when wet or hungry

how does a deer know to run when startled

how does a dog know how to bark

how does a tick know to bite and hang on to suck blood

i can go on for ever, i think its called instinct!
    Hello 'cocoapeachy' :

I don't know what the climate is like where you live, but, this should prove to be an interesting answer for you.

I live in Southwestern Ontario in Canada. We have pretty unpredictable winters here. Your squirrels are Black, Brown and Grey , here. They are the snow fore-casters !

    Here , it's not really ' where ' they build their nests .... it's '; how high ! ';.

If the squirrels build their nests high up in the trees, then, we know we' re going to get a lot of snow this winter. So, naturally, if the opposite is true ( low nests ) .... little snow !
Just puts it where ever he/she wants. they are like that!
    Animal instinct perhaps?

Or maybe it just likes the location.

Why do you chose to have your room layout like that?

Squirrels are evil rodents anyways. Don't go poking your head in their nests
Jenny's pretty much right until she said that squirrels are ';evil'; animals. Don't know what any ever did to her but I don't think any animal is ';evil';. They're just trying to live like the rest of us. There is no morality to an animal so there can be no evil.

  • How can I squirrel proof a bird feeder?

I have had a metal feeder for about 7 years that has saved my sanity concerning squirrels. It's a metal feeder that has a top that you lift up to fill it. On the front is a bar where the birds sit to eat. When a squirrel comes to the feeder, the bar drops down and the seed is inaccessible to the squirrel. I've had MANY squirrels fall off this feeder! They just don't get it, that they are too heavy. I recently bought one for my mother at Tractor Supply, I know you can find one on line. Just google ';squirrel proof feeder';, and you will find some. Good luck. How can I squirrel proof a bird feeder?
    Simple.

Put SAFFLOWER seed in the feeder. Squirrels do NOT eat safflower seed, but birds love it.

I buy mine at Walmart. How can I squirrel proof a bird feeder?
We have a lot of very sly squirrels in our area as well and we've found that if we hang the bird feeder from wire they can't get to it. Just make sure that the wire is at least 12 - 18 inches long and this should solve your problem.
try getting one of those bird feeders with a little cage-like thing around it if you know what i mean. Birds can get in, squirrels can't
never put them in or by trees and make sure to put it up very high on a pole that squirrels or any other animal can can climb
    stand and guard it :)
    go to gardenpests.com and search.
It depends on what type of feeder you use, and where it is located. For hanging feeders domes work well, positioned above the feeder by a foot or so.

If it does not work well immediately, put a knot in the line that holds the feeder and put a washer on there before sliding the dome onto it. That allows the dome to tip a little more under a squirrel's weight, and they slide off.

My girlfriend had a problem with them climbing the post-mounted feeders. It did not matter about one, because the feeder itself had a dome on top, plus it has an automatic battery-operated device that spins the bottom and throws the squirrels off. (triggered by the weight of the squirrel)

They would get up there and jump over to the other one which held suet. We tried several things to block them from jumping, but all failed.

Finally, I found a solution that worked! I bought galvanized vent pipe, wrapped it around the uprights, and clipped the pre-formed sides together to make a tube. They cannot climb it even with a running start, and they cannot leap five feet straight up to get over it.

Now they just eat whatever the birds drop onto the ground.

They still take a run at the tubes, but cannot get even half way up.
if it's a hanging feeder, there is a plastic dome that you put on the srting above the feeder, when squirrels get on the dome, it tilts and they fall off. If it's a pole feeder, there is another type of plastic dome, but this time it's inerted. a squirrel can't get around it.
I really don't think you can. Squirrels are *very* intelligent.
Try putting the bird feeder on a high, metal pole away from trees or the roof. Squirrels are very inventive.
Simple answer: You can't. Suggest you increase your bird-feeding budget to include extra food for the squirrels.

How long would it take to get from Squirrel Hill to Monroeville (Pittsburgh, PA)?

I live in Squirrel Hill and I need to get to CCAC Boyce Campus (bit past Monroeville). I have a class at six and I am supposed to be there fifteen minutes beforehand. Because of rush hour, how long will it take me to drive there taking 376? Its will be on a Wednesday.

Mapquest says that it will take 16 minutes but I doubt that. Is there any other way that might be faster??How long would it take to get from Squirrel Hill to Monroeville (Pittsburgh, PA)?
It all really depends on traffic and if you can avoid the tunnel. Once you get past the tunnel, it's smooth sailing unless there is an accident. It's always better to be safe than sorry so leave early just in case. I would leave about 35 mins before you have to be there. How long would it take to get from Squirrel Hill to Monroeville (Pittsburgh, PA)?
If at all possible, try to avoid going through the tunnel. Maybe get on 376 at the Wilkinsburg entrance (Route 8, I believe) rather than the Squirrel Hill entrance (you'll immedietely have to go through the tunnel if you do that).

Once you're past the tunnel, it usually takes no time at all to get to the Boyce campus, even during rush hour. Maybe 20 minutes. The places where you may come to a hold up are once you get off the Monroeville exit because of all the lights and intersections and such. Just leave yourself with a little extra time...leave a half-hour or 35 minutes before your class, and you should be fine.
I have driven it in 20 minutes but not in rush hour. About 7 PM on a Friday. My daughter went to Chatham in Squirrel Hill and when I visited, it took 20 minutes to get to this great Mexican restaurant in Monroeville.

I live in LA and I am quite amazed how well traffic moves in Pittsburgh. I was there just last week and even in rush hour I am amazed how well traffic moves on 5th.

I found a squirrel last night... What should I do with it? Does anyone have any good recipes?

    Squirrel Stew

    Ingredients:

    1 squirrel, quartered

    1 cup diced onion

2 large tomatoes (from your garden) or 1 can of tomatoes

    Assorted fresh ,or canned veggies

    Preparation:

Sprinkle seasoned salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper (optional) liberally on the meat. Pour some cooking oil into a large pot (dutch oven). Saut茅 the meat with the onions until well browned. Drain the excess oil, add about 2 cups water, and bring to a boil. Cut up the tomatoes and add. If you use canned tomatoes add them now. Turn down the heat, and let slow cook for at least an hour. Important: older squirrels may require cooking longer than an hour. Check periodically for tenderness. If you don't you will have a hard time chewing the meat. After the meat is tender, add the veggies, carrots, potatoes, banana pepper, what ever you like. Cook until the veggies are done. An option you can use is, cook up your favorite pasta and serve over the pasta. (eliminate the potatoes).I found a squirrel last night... What should I do with it? Does anyone have any good recipes?
    I don't think you should be eating a squirrel you 'found'. If you do BUY ONE you could cook it like this;

    BRUNSWICK STEW

    3-4 pounds GREY squirrel meat

    1/2 teaspoon salt

    3 potatoes

    1 large onion

    1 small tin broad beans

    1 small tin tomatoes

    1 level tablespoon sugar

    2-3 oz sweetcorn

    1 tablespoon ketchup/Worcester sauce

    2 oz butter

Cut squirrel meat into pieces, put in pan with enough boiling water to cover; add a little salt. Simmer for about 45 minutes.

Add sliced potatoes, sliced onions, broad beans, tomatoes and sugar. Cook until potatoes are tneder (about 45 miunutes).

Remove bones from meat, and shred it. Add sweetcorn. Cook for 10 minutes. Season to taste, add ketchup/sauce. Add butter. Stir well andI found a squirrel last night... What should I do with it? Does anyone have any good recipes?

Squirrel is supposed to be quite nice. Have never tried it yet, but you can buy it in some butchers in North England. Was watching a news report about it this morning, actually, on BBC.
You can treat squirrel the same as any ';game bird'; or other game such as rabbit. If it is a young, healthy animal it will not need cooking as long as anything bigger. Older and it will need the old braising technique of long, slow cooking. So it depends on your taste in food... Either ';plain'; like a southern fried chicken or in a stew. Pot-roast or curry... Whatever floats your boat! LOL!

I take it you ';found'; it as road kill, not ';dead of unknown causes';? It is not unknown for grey squirrels to be poisoned, so I personally would not trust anything not obviously shot or hit by a vehicle. But YMMV as they say!

Urrrmmm... Earthmother, dear. What month is this? I think it is April, although this may be a figment of my imagination...? I think you are confusing game with pork products anyway! LOL!
First of all It is best to eat squirrel or rabbit with months that end in a R. So I suggest you let it go, and when the R months start up again go hunting. One sguirrel to every person.
I don't think it is safe to eat if you found it dead--you don't know what killed it or how long ago. It may have had a disease. Don't risk it. If you killed it, that's different.
squirrel is a bit like rabbit - so would be lovely in a stew with carrots, mushrooms, onion and celery served with lovely creamy mashed potato - hope this helped (lol)

Will a squirrel eat the green beans in my garden?

Every thing is doing really well. I'm gathering fruit from all my other veggies but my green beans are growing, blooming and looking great but my beans seem to be disappearing. I can't imagine any reason for it except perhaps the squirrel I have seen around is feasting on them. Will they do that? Will a squirrel eat the green beans in my garden?
Yes, along with rabbits, mice, crows, and homeless people who need something to eat.

Plant marigold flowers beside or around your vegetables. The curious odor keeps many animals away, as has been proven by many generations of gardeners. Chemicals released by the flower also repel different types of harmful insects that would otherwise destroy your garden. Will a squirrel eat the green beans in my garden?
Yes, squirrels will eat the beans in your garden. They're even very capable of digging up bulbs you've planted, and they'll eat them too.
Yes, and they will eat the bean seeds before they sprout too. I try to keep the soil moist. They don't like digging in wet soil much.

Try putting corn in the trap
That a problem. Is the house to low to the ground to put a small dog under it? Maybe it would chase the squirrel out.
I used to feed 6 squirrels every day peanuts, almonds and they were very appreciative. I don't know why it would want to live with you.
Have you called your local animal control office? They may be able to help you with a different kind of trap, or something else that is working in your area.
aaahh...please dont hurt the cute squirrel, try offering it nuts and stuff, then catch it in a cage and sell it off to the pet store, or make it your own pet, i would....but anyway....nuts will work fine...

Grey squirrel hid some hazelnuts under the stump, and twice as many in tree hollow?

Black squirrel discovered both hiding places and stole two hazelnuts from each place. Now there are three times as many hazelnuts in the tree hollow than under the stump.

How many hazelnuts did grey squirrel hide in each place?Grey squirrel hid some hazelnuts under the stump, and twice as many in tree hollow?
s=# under stump, h=# in hollow

    h = 2s

    (h-2) = 3(s-2)

    2s-2 = 3(s -2)

    2s - 2 = 3s - 6

4 = s, so h = 2*4 = 8Grey squirrel hid some hazelnuts under the stump, and twice as many in tree hollow?
Assume x is the number of hazel nutes in the stump and y is the number in the tree hollow.

    2x=y.

    3(x-2)=y-2

    3x-6=y-2.

Subtract the first equation and the second equation

    3x-6=y-2.

    2x=y.

    x-6=-2.

    Add 6 to each side.

    x=4. 4*2=8.

4 hazelnuts under the stump and 8 in the tree hollow
    s=nuts in stump

    t=nuts in tree hollow

    The two equations are:

    2s=t

    t-2=3(s-2)

So substitute 2s=t into the second equation to make it become:

    2s-2=3(s-2)

    2s-2=3s-6

    6-2=3s-2s

    4=s

s=4 and since the tree stump contains twice as much nuts, t=8.

Therefore there were 4 hazelnuts in the stump and 8 in the tree stump.

Rabid animals generally foam at the mouth, or drool a lot. Most are really aggressive and attack, acting like they are Kodiac Bears or something else that big.

If squirrel is hurt it will be more aggressive than normal.

This is tricky??? :DWhat is the likelihood of a squirrel eating a rat compared to a dog eating a whale?
when it comes to finishing the entire animal, it is 90/1 that the squirrel eats the rat rather than that dog eats an entire whale at a ratio of 1,456/1.

Those are the actual statistics based on the average weight of a squirrel v rat, and a dog (average weight of 21.22 lbw vs a given whale. -john in Iowa (by the way it took me almost an hour to figure this and then hack myself back into a favorable spot in the answers positions..... but now it's time for bed. -john in IowaWhat is the likelihood of a squirrel eating a rat compared to a dog eating a whale?
I dog would actually be more likely to eat a whale.

Well if it was already dead and they didn't have to catch it alone or at all.

But any way, dog if without food for lond enough will begin to feel survival instincts kicking in and learn to hunt or eat what it can

A squirrel however would not eat a rat on the count they eat nuts, berries, and are basically herbavores or insectavores.
My vote goes toward a dog eating a whale!!

The way I'm picturing this is a squirrel with a dead rat in front of it, and a dog with a dead whale in front of it. My vote goes to dogs because a dog will eat meat, while a squirrel will not. That, and I've had many dogs that would eat anything :O

NY...New York? Sorry I'm British lol, but if it is New York I know they ban a lot of animals as pets. You can get pet chipmunks, they are a type of squirrel, also thirteen lined ground squirrels are common pets. More rare squirrels include the beautiful Prevost's Squirrel. You need to find out if they are legal in your area, then you will need a VERY large cage, more like an indoor aviary than a cage to be honest, as squirrels go crazy in small spaces...also you cant have a TV in the same room as your squirrel, the high pitched noise drives them insane. Be aware they are not really pets for handling, tame squirrels are few and far between...if you want something tamer you could consider a southern flying squirrel i hear these become tame if you buy them young and raise them properly.

Is it possible to be a Squirrel Whisper?

Can someone be a Squirrel Whisper? If so, how? I am very interested in squirrels...Especially this one that crawls on my bags! Please Reply Soon!Is it possible to be a Squirrel Whisper?
There's a lady named Mary Nacey and she's been given the title of Squirrel Whisperer. She works with baby squirrels for a wild life shelter in California and has fostered almost 150 squirrels. So yes, it's very likely that you could become a Squirrel Whisperer, but you would have to devote study to this animal, learn all about them and pursue a career working with these cute lil critters. Volunteer work with a wildlife organization, may be a great experience for you. The Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan, found a close connection with dogs growing up and as an adult devoted his life to working with them and understanding their behavior. Now he's famous, who woulda thunk it! I also think it's a gift as well, that certain people can communicate with animals in an effective way. It's not something everyone can do. I love animals and don't know how anyone could ever hurt them.

Here's an article and a video about Mary Nacey the Squirrel Whisperer. Enjoy!

A pellet gun rated at a .22 will do the job, they are legal to buy and shoot with in city limits, and you might enjoy yourself =)
Get a bird feeder, fill it with rat poison bait. The squirrels will scamper up to steal the bird feed, and be rewarded with the rat poison instead. If not this, try a .22 caliber varmint rifle, or a high powered pellet gun. I don't bother with trying to kill the buggers, I just let 'em be, but I DO try to run them over when they cross the street. I have yet to hit one; the buggers are too quick!
If you eat meat, eat the squirrels. It's both ethical and healthful because you know they're free-range and eating all the right foods. You'll save yourself some money and control the problem, so really you're killing two birds with one stone. (Don't forget to eat the birds, too.)

As a result of that first item, if you want a gun that can be used to hunt all three species you mentioned in Ohio, you need a shotgun. I'd recommend either a 12 or 20 gauge. I'd avoid a .410 since its considered to be too light for deer and it tends to throw a narrow shot pattern which could hinder hunting rabbits and squirrels. There are .410 deer slugs, but they're light and not nearly as effective as a 12 or 20 gauge deer slug though they will get the job done at close range.

Depending on the amount of money you want to spend you can get a NEF/H%26amp;R single shot for under $100 or a Remington/Winchester/Mossberg pump for around $400. The choice of action is up to you. Just make sure you're comfortable with it and that it has a good recoil pad. What is the best beginners Squirrel, rabbit, and deer hunting gun?
Get a 22LR for rabbits and squirrels. The 243 is a great deer rifle. Some people will say 'get a 30-06' but that is more of a generalist 'do anything' cartridge. The 243 is plenty powerful enough for deer. True, the 243 is no elk cartridge the 243 wouldn't be a good choice for hunting grizzly bear, but for whitetail deer the 243 is great
I think i might have answered your other Q about the deer rifle, and for deer the .243 is good and great for beginners. If you want a all around gun and dont want to completly destroy your kill then i would go with a youth .410 , since you want to hunt all kinds of game then your ganna want something that can take'em all, with a .410 you can shoot a variety of shells, for deer you have buckshot and rifled slugs, for squirrel, rabbit, and game birds they have bird shot or (low brass shell shot). the .12 gauge and . 20 gauge are good but it moght be a little much on some of your game. And dont let people tell you that a .410 wont kill a deer it can and will!!!!!!
Im 14 and i would definetly say a 20 ga. pump from benelli for an all around gun. Lethal for a deer with slugs, and it wont blow up a squirrel or rabbit. You can also go for birds with it and since it is a pump, get more than one at a time. I also like going for turkey with my benelli.

If you get an average break barrel 20 ga. i would say an over-under.
If it has to be a single gun, a 12 gauge, Bird Shot for Squirrels and Rabbits, and Buck shot or slugs for Deer, but I would rather get a high powered rifle (30-30, 30-06, 7mm, etc.) for the deer and a varmint rifle (.22, .22-250, etc.) for the squirrels and the bunnies.
I wouls say a .243 is the best, you can get smaller grain bullets for squirrel and up to 100grain for deer. It would be the best choice for you. Happy Hunting
i prfer a remington 870 20 or 12 guage that is what i use and love it is the perfect all around gun it is legal for practically evrything
Mossberg .410 for the smaller stuff. It has a low recoil. For deer i suggest 30 - 30 for short distances, 30 - 06 for long distances. A .270 would do fine also
ya your best bet is a 20 gauge i highly recomend the remington 1100 youth model 20 gauge i have it and i love it (i am 13) it is semi auto 3 shots and very reliable. hope this helps
i would say a rifle for you because shot guns are hevy and pak more of a punch. A kid like you would probable have a better chance with a rifle too because of the aim.
243 would be good first deer gun,but way too much power for squirell and rabbit. 410 or 20 gauge shot gun would be your best bet.You can shoot slugs for deer and regular bird shot for the rest.
I would go with a 6mm or a 7mm for the deer hunting and a .22 for the rabbit and squirrel thing
Well a 22 for the small animals and a 243 for deer its a good gun

20 gauge is your best bet there would be nothing left of a squirrel or rabbit after a .243 round

    Squirrel eviction from attic cost?

I recently had one of these firms come to my home and submit an estimate to remove squirrels from the attic and provide one year warranty. The cost? $800.

Has anyone used these guys before? Is $800 just about right or is it too high?Squirrel eviction from attic cost?
I would never pay that much. It is so easy to get rid of them by yourself. Simply buy a Havahart or similar trap. Cost: $40 !

I bought the larger trap and caught three raccoons at once in it!

I have caught squirrels, raccoons and possums with these traps.

Easy. Plus the trap will last much longer than a year. Best wishes.

I am not sure what area you are in, but in California I would expect a professional removal would cost around $350. If you decide to go with pros, check around for a lower price. It also depends on how big a problem you have. Bigger problem,

bigger bucks. Unless you are willing to do it yourself as I do.

This repellent鈥檚 time-release granules can be used around bird feeders or other small outdoor trouble-spots, but it is most useful indoors (when hung in mesh bags) at keeping squirrels out of areas (like the attic or wall voids) that were once infested. Outdoors, expect a 20-ounce jar of granules to treat 250 square feet of space and last up to 2 months. Indoors, the same 20 ounces can treat 500 square feet of attic space and last up to 3 months.
NO!!!! NO!!!! NO!!!! Hopefully you have a Farm Supply Store or a Do-It-Yourself Pest Control Store nearby. You can buy a bottle of ';Red Fox'; urine for under $20. They sell small containers with screw on caps. They have are filled with cotton and have holes in the bottom. You saturate the cotton with the urine and throw the containers out into your attic. The squirrels will leave. I have 12 rent houses and I us it all the time. It sure is not worth the $800 they want to charge.

    RIDICULOUS!!!!

What is that logo of a profile view of a grey squirrel?

I've seen it twice on cars and it doesn't have any words under or around it. Basically it's a profile (side view) of a grey squirrel not holding any nuts and it's a cartoon. I tried searching for it and I couldn't find it. I'm curious and huge fan of squirrels and I would like to know what the logo belongs to and what it's called. Thanks! What is that logo of a profile view of a grey squirrel?
In England the Gray Squirrel has taken over the native Red Squirrels, it may have been an ad about that.

    - Gray squirrels went, saw, conquered England

There's a war brewing in England, and everyone seems to be on the side of the reds. ... It seems that the gray squirrel is just better than the red at ';squirreling. ...thank you

Can you actually have a squirrel for a pet?

I don't want one , I just want to know and would you like get it from a pet store??Can you actually have a squirrel for a pet?
In some states you may keep squirrels as pets. Most people that have squirrels found them as defenseless babies and bottle-fed them. I don't think pet stores carry them. Can you actually have a squirrel for a pet?
You can have them as pets. It may or may not be legal in your state. Yes, some pet stores do sell them. If you google exotic pets and squirrel I promise you will find tree rats for sale. I personally have two pet squirrels. Not sugar gliders, just regular tree rats. I rescued both as injured babies. One is 5 years old the other is about 3 months. They make wonderful pets if you have the time to devote to them. They do require a lot of time and energy. They need constant attention. Too much for most people.
yes, they are legal to have in pennsylvania as long as you get a permit and buy them from the state of pennsylvania. i have a southern flying squirrel and had to search for months to find a reputable breeder which i could purchase mine from. they are rarely sold in stores so your best bet would be to find a breeder. not sure about maryland or new york, but you probobly need a permit as well.
yeah because my friend has two and they are so cute and happy but they were found on the ground because they fell out of their nest and their mother had rejected them so she took them in and they have everything they need to be happy
i know you can in oregon in also know that you cant have them in California
you can have a southern flying squirrel but no pet stores sell them, you need to get them from a breeder
