What is the difference between a chipmunk and a squirrel?

The animals we know as chipmunks and squirrels are all members of the squirrel family. In fact, chipmunks are actually a type of squirrel - a ground squirrel. Prairie dogs are also ground squirrels. What makes a chipmunk a chipmunk is morphological. If it looks like a chipmunk, people tend to call it a chipmunk. There is really no set distinction between chipmunks and other ground squirrels save the recent species divergence on the evolutionary tree. That is to say, chipmunks are more closely related to other chipmunks than other ground squirrels but not by that much. Google a picture of a ground squirrel and you will find they look very much like the animals you know as chipmunks. I am going to assume that the animal you are referring to as a squirrel is in fact a tree squirrel. Tree squirrel differ from ground squirrels morphologically and behaviorally due to their arboreal (tree-dwelling) lifestyle. What is the difference between a chipmunk and a squirrel?

What is the difference between a chipmunk and a squirrel?
One difference between tree squirrels and chipmunks is that chipmunks have internal cheek pouches in which they can temporarily store food as they forage on the ground -- using them like pockets -- while tree squirrels don't (but ground squirrels do).

Chipmunks live on the ground and are generally smaller.
chipmunk does not contains the same letters as squirrel....
Size. Habitat. Probably other morphological things that you could locate with about 5 minutes on a search engine.
Rocky and Bullwinkle vs. Chip and Dale..who would win?
By sight the easiest thing to identfy them is their tail. Squirrels have a bushy tail that they curl up behind them, while chipmunks have a thinner, straighter tail. Squirrels are also bigger than chipmunks, and can be either red or gray, chipmunks are usually red.

What kind of supplies do you give to a Squirrel with a Suit & Hat on who's running off into the Sunset?

Will be doing that very soon. What kind of supplies do you give to a Squirrel with a Suit %26amp; Hat on who's running off into the Sunset?
I'll give you a week's supply and then you you will have to be back from the Sunset.

Lot's of nuts, a water bottle, a radio (squirrel has to catch his Yankee games), a cell-phone (for emergencies), reading material for relaxation, and a fanny pack to hold everything.

See you soon! What kind of supplies do you give to a Squirrel with a Suit %26amp; Hat on who's running off into the Sunset?
A miniture unicycle. A squirrel with suit %26amp; hat on is funny, add a unicycle into the equasion and you've got laughs for life!
A pocket full of notes to open one each day while youre away.

I'd give ya a small scooter too so ya wouldnt strictly have to run.

I'd hope to give ya some reasons to come back too.

Hugs on ya,

Dallas
A brief case full of acorns, Mp3 player, bottled water, and a map of all the not squirrel proofed bird feeders in town.
You give him plenty of nuts, water, and a blanket
I'd give him a six pack of condoms and a box of chocolate covered raisins.
I would give him a big supply Reeces Pieces Buttercups just for old times sake. :)
A suitcase full of dried corn. and a map to the promised land, and good luck wishes.
A bag to carry his nuts
two bag s of cashew
That you take care of yourself and come back to us, we will miss you.

Get a gun, take aim, shoot.Your done.I have a Squirrel that has made a home between my walls. What advise can you give me to get rid of him?
why kill such a sweet %26amp; beautifull creature of wild life. When u could build a little box home for it in a tree then leed it to it %26amp; domesticate it with some of its natural foods. Then both of you could get along fameously.

I have a Squirrel that has made a home between my walls. What advise can you give me to get rid of him?
Put some mothballs in his hole. Works for possums and raccoons too.
Dynamite?
A small live trap that you can buy at lowes. Place nutter butter cookie inside as bait. You will have him in a matter of minutes. Once you get him, seal the hole in your wall. Dispose of rodent as you feel fit.
exterminator
i'll have my mother in law come over and scare the crap out of it like she does me when she comes over.
If you know where he is entering at, a black rubber snake will keep him away
Try mothballs. It gets rid of insects and snakes
get a ferret on a line. it'll take on the squirrel and most likely win
alright without doing any damage to your home this trap might work.(considering if this squirrel come outside and you know where he comes out at if you don't know FIND OUT)

get a deep bucket fill it halfway with water sprinkle sunflower seeds so they float on top put a board from the ground to the top of the bucket(like a ramp) and if you want sprinkle sun flower seeds from wherever the squirrel comes out of to and up the ramp. it's worked for my neighbors it might work for you.
The best way would be to get a pest specialist to install an ';exclusion system'; in your attic/crawlspace. It should cost $4-5 a linear foot. Mine was less than $400 for the entire house, much less than redoing the wiring in the house that they will eventually chew through to make their nests.

Getting rid of that one makes no difference. Many more will come when they find out how warm your home is. Then the rats come. This is the logical choice, and the humane one. After all, they do not realize that they are doing anything wrong.

Traps will not solve the problem, and poison will cause animals to die in the walls and attic.

Good luck to you.

Is there any way to get a pet squirrel?

Is it legal to have a squirrel as a pet? Can you get them anywhere? How long do they live?Is there any way to get a pet squirrel?
As Pet Luver said...you have to have a permit...

The permit costs a pretty penny, but it's not too bad for squirrels...it gets exspensive when you get into venomous snakes, crocks, possoms...ect.

It also depends on where you live...

If you have a local exotic pet shop, go down and ask them where you can get a permit...

Or look up your local wild life rescues and ask some of them about it...

Then you can find a rescue service or breeder who has squirrels...

They can live upto ten years...

It's only illegal if you go out and start trapping animals with no permit, and if you breed them...

I hope this helps...GOOD LUCK!!!Is there any way to get a pet squirrel?
squirrels are wild animals! They are known to attack humans if you trap them! If I was you I would think of another pet!
Well, I had an adorable squirrel which I raised from baby hood. He had a big cage, and liked to hide underneath our sweaters and sleep. He would fight with your fingers like a puppy or kitty, and he knew his name (Dale for originality). Unfortunately, squirrels chew, and chew, and chew. If they get lose and have free run of your place - say goodbye to your furniture. I've know a friend who had one get lost and it was in the house for three days before they found it. He had chewed a hole right through the plaster boards to hide in the walls. I think squirrels belong in the wild. Thats where mine was reintroduced through a provincial park in Ontario, by the wildlife authorities. They'd never seen such a friendly squirrel in their lives.
You have to get a liscence. this takes time and money. They are not legall in any states to have as a normal hous pet. Good Luck.
Many wild animals will become tame if you get them when thye are young, especially squirrels. One was injured by a dog and rescued and lived in the house as a much loved pet from then on. They are fun and very friendly.

Dont take one from the wild for your own entertainment--that's not fair. If you have the opportunity to rescue and make a life-long friend thats a different story all together.
My sister's friend has a pet squirrel and he is sooo cute and friendly!! They found it as a baby and raised him and he is so sweet he will sit on your shoulder. I am not sure how long squirrels live but our friend's has lived for about 2 years I think.

A squirrel is a wild animal!

It would be cruel to keep it as a pet, even if you were allowed to, but I am positive that it is illegal!
There are exotic animal breeders who breed flying squirrels in captivity. To obtain one, though, would be expensive and difficult, as there aren't that many flying squirrel breeders around.

But please don't resort to wild squirrels. If you see a nest of baby squirrels, please, PLEASE resist the urge to take one to raise, no matter what anyone says. They are wild animals, and deserve to stay that way.

Good luck!

  • How do you treat Cranial Calcification in English Squirrel Hounds, Beaver Terriers, and Hamster Herders?

These are all sub-breeds of the English Beaver Hound. Cranial Calcification is endemic in these populations and is generally not a problem if you ignore the fact that they tend to have romantic inclinations towards one's leg and engage in inapproriate sniffing. A swift kick will discourage this and over time the behavior will cease.

English Beaver Hounds are well known for their ability to detect beavers from quite a distance and once on the chase will pursue them until they are caught or the hound is locked up. Unfortunately as the wild beaver population has declined there have been significant problems with them chasing domestic beavers with some unfortunate results. How do you treat Cranial Calcification in English Squirrel Hounds, Beaver Terriers, and Hamster Herders?
Put them all in a pen and let them sort it out amongst themselves. How do you treat Cranial Calcification in English Squirrel Hounds, Beaver Terriers, and Hamster Herders?
i'm just going to pretend that I know what you're talking about.

It's true calcification of the cerebellum is a particular problem in hard water areas of the UK. I find the best remedy is think about a dilute solution of vinegar for ten minutes every day. On no account should one go for the quick fix acid being touted at raves and psychodelic tea parties in Chelsea. A dilute solution of mushrooms freshly picked from Soham horse fen can be useful in extreme cases where the eyebrows have joined.

How long does it take for a baby squirrel's eyes to open and how long before it grows up??

I need some advice on taking care of a baby squirrel.thanks in advance. How long does it take for a baby squirrel's eyes to open and how long before it grows up??
    Check out this website:

    http://www.squirrel-rehab.org/index.html

I suggest you contact a wildlife rehabilitator close to you who knows the proper diet and feeding for a squirrel. In most states, it is illegal to care for a wild animal, even if you have every intention of releasing it when it's older.

If you feed the incorrect diet, you can actually help contribute in it developing metabolic bone disease which will eventually kill the critter. Please do what is in the best interest of the squirrel and contact someone near you who is trained to handle the baby.

Have you read the story of the killer squirrel in Berlin?

Some old geezer had to crush it to death with his crotch!Have you read the story of the killer squirrel in Berlin?
Hahaha! I just found it but it wasn't his crotch it was his crutch...I just had visions of some old guy squeezing a squirrel to death between his legs!!!!Have you read the story of the killer squirrel in Berlin?
    Rock on
His crutch not his crotch...and besides...don't you think it is sad that that poor young squirrels mother said ';Go out and get us some nuts';.but like a typical teenager....the young squirrel stayed on his playstation and his mother had to remind him...she said GO!.........NUTS! and he thought she meant go nuts so he did and look what happened to the poor tree rat( That is what they actually are)

    Best wishes, Mike.
i watched a video on youtube about a squirrel, it was eating the head of a dead rat.
    must have had pmt
Yes. I heard that story and had to laugh because we have the same kind of feisty squirrel in the tree out front. He terrorizes our cat to the point where the cat now goes out the back window. He also critiques my singing-he doesnt like it and lets me know. So far he hasnt attacked-but it's only a matter of time. JK
    Must've been after his nuts...
Erm it was his crutch. LOL

Yes I read it, it needed taking out though, didnt it? Poor thing went berserk!
did it give him jock itch??
What a death. Killed by the 'crotch' of an elderly man...

There's worse ways to go, but not many...!

Ha ha ha ah, ugh, choke...wheeze...uh
