Describe how a squirrel cage motor is different from a motor with slip rings?

Squirrel cage motor different from a motor with slip rings?Describe how a squirrel cage motor is different from a motor with slip rings?
All electrical motors are basically, the result of two magnetic pole chasing each other....ssomewhat like a dog chasing its tail...never catching up.

There are several poles in a motor, depending on the winding, or permanent magnets imbedded.

The motor has a set or system of magnet/coils in the ';outer housing'; which is called the field. Another, different set is in the rotor(armature..which spins)

The magnetism in the rotor is affected by the magnetism in the field which causes the rotation by the repelling/attracting action of the two magnetic field....and never catching each other.

To create the magnet/magnetic fields in motors..there are several ways.

..A squirrel cage motor , has a rotor that has no wiring connection to it.

The rotor of the squirrel cage, is made such that when it rotates ina magnetic field, it generates an internal electrical current, to flow in a manner to create a magnetic field...therefore no wiring to the external power source. The magnetic field to activate the rotor comes from the coils which are in the motor housing or the field circuit. Therefore the housing's coils has to have a wiring to the power source.

In a slip ring motor..... the rotor has coils wound in it, which terminates as wire ends. These wire ends has to make contact with the external power supply while the rotor is spinning. Therefore at one end of the motor , there are rings attached to the wire ends, and a contact brush(electrical) which allows electricity to pass while the ring rotates.

A slip ring motor, therefore generates the rotor's magnetic field from coils within the rotor that is externally fed with power.

The field of the slip ring motor can be either coils to create the magnetic field, or permanent magnets imbedded in the housing.

The basic difference between the two motors is that sq. cage has no coils in the rotor.....slip rings has a rotor with coils.

The characteristic/power of the two are very different for equivalent design.
