How many fps (Feet Per Second) does it take to kill a bird, squirrel.?

Please include where to shoot the animal. How many fps (Feet Per Second) does it take to kill a bird, squirrel.?
About 600 FPS in .22, 800 in .177 for heart shots on squirrel.

(Head shots are boasting. That brain is about the size of your

little fingernail.)How many fps (Feet Per Second) does it take to kill a bird, squirrel.?
My son picks off rats by the barn with a pellet rifle, I think it is rated for 600 or 800 fps. He is usually about 10-20 feet from them when he hits them. I don't know how fast the speed drops off a pellet, so I don't know exactly what it takes to kill them. If he can hit them, he kills them.

He has killed rabbits in the garden with the same gun, but it is harder. I'd guess squirrel size game, at close range, would be the limit.

BTW - In most states squirrels have seasons, and limits. Most birds are either protected, or have seasons and limits. Make sure the animals you are shooting are legal! Check with you state game commission. They should have a website with the rules.
Squirrels take 3 ft-lbs of impact energy. Birds take 2-3 ft-lbs of impact energy, depending on species. For a .177 air-rifle, you need an impact velocity of 415 fps for squirrels and between 340-415 fps for birds. To get those kinds of impact velocities out to at least 20-30 yards, you need a gun that delivers at least 600-700 fps of muzzle velocity. For a .22 rimfire, any round you'll be using will deliver the needed 3 ft-lbs of impact energy. Ditto for any shotgun round (out to 30 yards or so).

As for where to shoot... With rifles, headshots are the best option. Barring that, aim for the heart-lung cavity. With shotguns, the shot pattern kinda defeats the purpose of precise aiming. Just put the shot pattern on the squirrel.
it really doesn't matter if they are legal as long as you can think up an excuse for how they are being pests. 600 fps is good at 25 yards on squirrels you just gotta hit em in the head or heart. birds are easy with anything from 350 fps and up. all of these are in .17 cal bb gun.
i killed a ruffed grouse with one shot in head w/ daisy bb gun probably 400 altogether i've shot squirrels up the bett which paralized him
wth are you doing on the audubon site? go to the National Redneck Association site- they are the gun nuts
