There is really no set distinction between chipmunks and other ground squirrels save the recent species divergence on the evolutionary tree. That is to say, chipmunks are more closely related to other chipmunks than other ground squirrels but not by that much. Google a picture of a ground squirrel and you will find they look very much like the animals you know as chipmunks. I am going to assume that the animal you are referring to as a squirrel is in fact a tree squirrel. A small live trap that you can buy at lowes. Place nutter butter cookie inside as bait. You will have him in a matter of minutes. Once you get him, seal the hole in your wall. Dispose of rodent as you feel fit.

alright without doing any damage to your home this trap might work.(considering if this squirrel come outside and you know where he comes out at if you don't know FIND OUT)





get a deep bucket fill it halfway with water sprinkle sunflower seeds so they float on top put a board from the ground to the top of the bucket(like a ramp) and if you want sprinkle sun flower seeds from wherever the squirrel comes out of to and up the ramp. it's worked for my neighbors it might work for you.
The best way would be to get a pest specialist to install an ';exclusion system'; in your attic/crawlspace. It should cost $4-5 a linear foot. Mine was less than $400 for the entire house, much less than redoing the wiring in the house that they will eventually chew through to make their nests.


Getting rid of that one makes no difference. Many more will come when they find out how warm your home is. Then the rats come. This is the logical choice, and the humane one. After all, they do not realize that they are doing anything wrong.


Traps will not solve the problem, and poison will cause animals to die in the walls and attic.

The permit costs a pretty penny, but it's not too bad for squirrels...it gets exspensive when you get into venomous snakes, crocks, possoms...ect.


It also depends on where you live...


If you have a local exotic pet shop, go down and ask them where you can get a permit...


Or look up your local wild life rescues and ask some of them about it...


Then you can find a rescue service or breeder who has squirrels...





They can live upto ten years...





It's only illegal if you go out and start trapping animals with no permit, and if you breed them...

Well, I had an adorable squirrel which I raised from baby hood. He had a big cage, and liked to hide underneath our sweaters and sleep. He would fight with your fingers like a puppy or kitty, and he knew his name (Dale for originality). Unfortunately, squirrels chew, and chew, and chew. If they get lose and have free run of your place - say goodbye to your furniture. I've know a friend who had one get lost and it was in the house for three days before they found it. He had chewed a hole right through the plaster boards to hide in the walls. I think squirrels belong in the wild. Thats where mine was reintroduced through a provincial park in Ontario, by the wildlife authorities. They'd never seen such a friendly squirrel in their lives.
You have to get a liscence. this takes time and money. They are not legall in any states to have as a normal hous pet. Good Luck.
Many wild animals will become tame if you get them when thye are young, especially squirrels. One was injured by a dog and rescued and lived in the house as a much loved pet from then on. They are fun and very friendly.





Dont take one from the wild for your own entertainment--that's not fair. If you have the opportunity to rescue and make a life-long friend thats a different story all together.
My sister's friend has a pet squirrel and he is sooo cute and friendly!! They found it as a baby and raised him and he is so sweet he will sit on your shoulder. I am not sure how long squirrels live but our friend's has lived for about 2 years I think.

It would be cruel to keep it as a pet, even if you were allowed to, but I am positive that it is illegal!
There are exotic animal breeders who breed flying squirrels in captivity. To obtain one, though, would be expensive and difficult, as there aren't that many flying squirrel breeders around.


But please don't resort to wild squirrels. If you see a nest of baby squirrels, please, PLEASE resist the urge to take one to raise, no matter what anyone says. They are wild animals, and deserve to stay that way.

I suggest you contact a wildlife rehabilitator close to you who knows the proper diet and feeding for a squirrel. In most states, it is illegal to care for a wild animal, even if you have every intention of releasing it when it's older.





If you feed the incorrect diet, you can actually help contribute in it developing metabolic bone disease which will eventually kill the critter. Please do what is in the best interest of the squirrel and contact someone near you who is trained to handle the baby.

Ok - if you weren't looking for the old joke.....then some fruit and nuts in a live trap would be the best way.
Go get a trap at your local garden supply store, or hardware store. The trick is to find what they like to eat to bait them in. Dog food usually works. Start spreading the bait right now before you put the trap out and get them used to eating it. If it doesn't eat it try something different. When you have found what they like put it in the trap in the area where you have been feeding them. good luck.

Your local animal control probably rents what they call humane traps. You bait them with those little packs of peanut butter you get when you order breakfasts at some fast food places. After the squirrel is caught you release it in a park or wooded area. Please be careful if it's a lactating female because they get VERY protective of their babies.

Wouldn't touch a red squirrel...they are pretty rare these days. Y'all must be city folk if you've never had squirrel. A couple squirrels, couple rabbits, potatoes, onions, carrots, seasoning, definitely garlic. Brown the meat in a skillet. Put all ingredients into a roaster. Add water,skillet drippins (gives u a nice brown color). Bake it up. Serve w/cornbread or biscuits. No different than Venison, beef, pork....be adventurous...try it!! Whine...definitely a white Moscatto.

I have been eating and hunting squirrel for 15 years, I would suggest at least 2 back half of a Grey squirrel per person eating. Seeing as when it is cooked it has a similar color to pork, but tastes like a sweet chicken, I would recomment a white wine. Pair the wine with the flavors you are using to cook the meat. A buttery chardonay would be excellent.

a recipe that I have used many times for squirrel is to deep fry them after quartering them, and smother them in wing sauce. It makes a great tasting ';chicken'; wing.

A squirrel in my backyard covered in pink lumps?

Just wondering if anyone knows what could be wrong with this squirrel I just saw in my backyard? Although it didn't look starved and where it still had fur it was dark black and healthy looking, this squirrel was covered in small pinkish lumps - mostly around its head and neck. There were a few patches of fur missing as well. I have pets that go outside and I'd hate for them to catch something series. I would just put on some gloves, pick up the squirrel and put it in a plastic bag and then throw it away. But you might want to use two plastic bags, like double it up. Thats what we did when we found a squirrel in our yard.

I am also a hunter and live in Ohio and have found that squirrels don't require a blind or a call. They respond to sudden movement and sound.


You can walk straight into an area where you know they are and not worry about making noise. Find a tree to sit by and don't make any sudden moves. Even though they saw or heard you come in, they will start moving again in about five minutes or so.


They will always run to the other side of the tree when they see you coming but curiousity will kill them every time.

Hunting squirrels from a blind is really limiting yourself. You may be able to call a squirrel or two to your location, or maybe some will scamper by on their own. Basically, you should be able to move about freely to seek out or stalk them. Squirrels can respond to calling, but it is very hit or miss. It is not like calling ducks or deer. Squirrel calls work well for getting a squirrel to betray his location and generally nothing more. I have used squirrel calls for over 20 years with limited success.

Hello?! Keep your cat indoors, as that is the safest place for it and the animals outside like the unfortunate squirrel. However, are you talking a full grown adult squirrel here? If so, I don't think your cat killed it. Cat's rarely go after something as large, fast, and wily as an adult squirrel. Most domestic house cats are not fast enough to catch a health adult squirrel.
A bell might help but the only way to prevent it is to not let your cat inside. its safer for the cat, and it will live much longer on average.

shake and bake original recipe. Use it just like you would on a chicken. It comes out crisp on the outside, but tender, moist and tasty on the inside!!

I haven't had squirrel for many years, but one way I cook chicken and pork-


Use no flour or meal-


Just sauté the meat in a light cooking oil (safflower, sunflower, canola). 2-4 tablespoons.


While in the pan, sprinkle lightly with salt and pepper (lightly!!) or if you can find it- use ';Soul Seasoning';. (the green label is better than the blue)


Gently sear on each side then cover and smother until tender. Turn the heat down loooooow. Don't over cook. Often I add a red potato, quartered at the beginning.


The oil will blend with the juices from the meat and make a caramelised sauce. When you serve it- pour the sauce over the top.


Super fine!








On the ';Soul seasoning';. A company called ';Spice Supreme'; makes the green label, and it is the best you will find. ';Clover valley'; makes the blue label, and its just okay. If you use this- you do not need salt and pepper.
My grandmother would fry the squirrel in butter until golden brown, sometimes fry it in butter with a batter of flower and egg never got tired of it as a boy gram ma is gone now but I still remember her cooking squirrel and catfish mmmmgood.


Have had squirrel in pasta sauce some of my Italian friends made it at a game party several years ago and it was real good.
Because of disease and parasites, boil the entire cleaned carcass for 15 minutes before doing anything else with it!





Then a sprinkle of seasoned salt is so darn good, it is gilding the lily to get more complex, but sure, do whatever pleases you for a series of novelties in the old squirrel-for-dinner routine!

Squirrel tacos or burritos; prepare it the same as you would with beef. I have had this with rabbit and other game meat. Just boil the meat and de-bone then add the spices and cook till the spices blend into the meat.

Ground squirrels in Ca are vermin and can be shot with anything from a 22CB to a 50bmg shotgun and pistol are ok as well.





Tree (Or Gray) Squirrels are game animals that you can eat. There is a specific season for them as well.

The last I heard, ground squirrels were considered a pest (general hunting license, no closed season), unless they are the Golden Mantled ground squirrel. The real Goldies look magnificent, with an elaborate gold and black figured ';saddle'; covering more than half (usually 3/4) their visible bodies! These are truly worth protecting, and are quite rare. Much more common, are ordinary ground squirrels sometimes with a bit of Goldie genetics visible in their rather meager markings, and no reasonable person would say these ones are specifically Gold Mantled ground squirrels. However, many underqualified and openly idiotic preservationists with badges have asserted that any markings at all are ';protected';. If this happens, take the evidence to court, and if the beastie was confiscated and destroyed, move for dismissal for lack of evidence, and petition the court to block the blockhead from government employment for incompetence. Squirrel meat tastes like rabbit. About 10% of ground squirrels (and their fleas) have Plague (yes, Plague!), and all taken squirrels should be boiled to make them safe to eat, after first shaking off all the fleas well away from camp! And don't nick yourself when cleaning one. If you do, and soon notice things getting strange in your throat glands, some common Terramycin antibiotic pills wipe it out. Too bad they didn't have the stuff way back when! Have some broad spectrum antibiotic (not penicillin, which is only gram negative) in your first aid kit for that, and to stop nasty infections well away from proper medical treatment facilities. Most ranchers and farmers welcome ground squirrel hunters, but as always, check local laws, as any city or county government can make even farting in the dark a crime.
